Dr K Crotty - Senior Lecturer

Dr K Crotty was appointed in January 1989. She studied Medicine at the University of New South Wales. In 1987 she obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Her Registrar training was undertaken in the Haematology, Clinical Chemistry and Microbiology Departments of St Vincents Hospital, Sydney and in the Anatomical Pathology Department at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. She is an Anatomical Pathologist (Clinical Academic) in the Department of Anatomical Pathology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. In 1993 she was a Research Fellow in the Department of Dermatopathology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Research Interests

Her research program is directed towards determining the biological behaviour of melanocytic lesions. The main area of interest is melanocytic lesions of uncertain malignant potential and development of criteria for predicting biological behaviour. As a diagnostic Anatomical Pathologist Dr Crotty is interested in developing criteria for improved diagnosis and in furthering understanding of the biology of melanocytic lesions. She collaborates with the Department of Anatomical Pathology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the Sydney Melanoma Unit, the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and is a member of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Institute.

Current projects include Spitz naevi in young adults; a review of the Sydney Melanoma Unit cases of desmoplastic melanoma; regression in melanocytic lesions; proliferation in melanocytic lesions; and morphometry of melanocytic lesions

Dr Crotty is a member of the committee of the Australian Dermatopathology Society and was co-organizer of Society's Annual Scientific Meeting in 1996. Together with Dr S McCarthy, she organized the Pathology track of the 4th World Conference on Melanoma in June 1997.

Dr Crotty has been appointed co-ordinator of the NATA/Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Dermatopathology Quality Assurance Programme
